Who is Bill Gardner?

I called the New Hampshire Democratic Party today as I was searching for authoritative information on when the New Hampshire Primary would be held. Yes - you read that right, the New Hampshire primary date has not yet been set!

A quick search on Wikipedia showed that the New Hampshire primary date is still blank.

It's important to CasaBlanca Project volunteers for many reasons. First, because some volunteers and organizers may be planning trips up to Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and other early primary states. Second, because after two years of heavy struggle, and finally achieving the success of having a state with a significant Latino population scheduled as the second state in the nation to hold a caucus (Nevada), the consensus in the media is that New Hampshire is about to change their date to January 8, between Iowa and Michigan, leaving Nevada fourth!

Once again, Latinos would be left out of the picture, not adding their voice to the early (and most important) part of the process of choosing the nominee of our Democratic Party for the general election of 2008.

I spoke with a polite and efficient member of the staff there, who informed me that the Democratic and Republican primaries are held on a date announced by the Secretary of State, Bill Gardner.

I then called the Secretary of State's office and spoke with a member of their staff, who explained the process: Bill Gardner will determine a date of his liking, and then announce this date to the media. Apparently, in New Hampshire, one man makes this choice. A choice which will affect diversity in the nominating process, timing of the primaries, and ultimately affect the way in which millions of people will participate.

Martinez to head up recruitment effort in Indiana

Cynthia Martinez, originally from Paraguay, has agreed to head up recruitment of Latino state directors for the CasaBlanca Project in the great state of Indiana.

After starting a job with the Starbucks Corporation in 2003, and quickly rising through the ranks until achieving the role of regional trainer, among other responsibilities, Martinez is the center of a number of intersecting Latino communities in the heartland.

Although Martinez will be taking some time off in the next several weeks for her wedding to Specialist Robert Matthew Thebarge, she expects to find at least one person for each of the eight presidential candidates before the quarterly DNC meeting at the end of November.

9500 Liberty

Truly incredible work is being done right now by Eric Byler and Annabel Park, in advancement of the new Civil Rights movement we are seeing in this country, to protect the rights of Latino and other immigrants, and who are under attack by conservative Republican politicians throughout the country.

Please visit their YouTube work.

By spending countless hours attending county hearings, interviewing players on both sides of the issue, Byler and Park have distilled a truly compelling reason to go out, organize voters, and drive the hatred, racism and police-state mentality out of our local, regional and statewide elected bodies.

Virginia Latinos on a Roll

This is part 3 in our continuing coverage of state-level Latino Democratic organizations (LDO's).

The Democratic Latino Organization of Virginia (DLOV) recently held a very successful fundraiser headlined by the very popular Governor Timothy Kaine (D-VA) and other statewide and regional Latino leaders.

The event was able to raise over $10,000 which will go into a fund that will allow the DLOV PAC to endorse and make contributions to Latino candidates as well as other candidates who have the best interests of the Latino community at heart. Some of the candidates endorsed by the PAC were Adam Ebbin and Marty Martinez, both of whom are running for seats as State Delegates.

Although DLOV is only two years old, the able leadership of Alfonso Lopez, Sindy Benavides, Lina Orr D'Gornaz, Luis Parada, Carlos Soles, Andrew Rivera and others has resulted in the ability of this organization to raise money and play an active role in statewide politics. DLOV is now positioned in such a way as to advise Latino Democratic Organizations in other states, as they begin to approach some of the same hurdles faced earlier by DLOV.

"An ideal situation," explains DNC Member Jerome Wiley Segovia, "would be to be able to count a Latino Democratic organization in each of the fifty states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. We are working towards that, and we trust the the success of and LDO such as DLOV will only help to encourage similar organizations elsewhere to do the same."
